Aging Well: Preparing to be Thankful at Home

Thanksgiving is one week away. I have always loved this holiday as a gathering of family and friends as well as the celebration of being thankful. We all have so much to be thankful for and especially our freedom. Our daughter was born the day after Thanksgiving on the 25th, 39 years ago; 12 minutes after midnight to be exact, so another reason Thanksgiving is special.

This Thanksgiving is our quiet year, as our kids and grands will be with their in-laws and we will celebrate with my Mom and sister. I should also say it will be a “relaxing” Thanksgiving as I will be cooking a small meal and not the usual feast. Although I will miss everyone, this may be just what is needed… some downtime.

As you may know, we moved earlier this year in the spring and have been updating our home. I can never skip decorating for Thanksgiving although I know many people that do since it is so close to Christmas holidays. I have been meaning to share some updates to our home, made over the last 6 months and thought now would be perfect before the hustle that lies ahead. I should add that I am not a decorator, I enjoy curating and making it work. My opinion is that it does not have to be in style, if it makes us happy. And our home is very lived in, with two sweet dogs. (Dottie was napping during the photo shoot and could not make an appearance.) I have not decided on draperies yet, so please excuse my windows; I don’t make those decisions quickly. Mr. Silver and I, (mainly Mr. Silver) continue to have our running list of to-do’s but have made considerable headway.

BEFORE PIC… excuse my water bottle.

The great room which was a different color of wood.

I like to collect fresh pinecones and sprinkle them with cinnamon oil for the fall.

Love the bigger bar area and room for all five grandkids.

I love my philodendrons and grow them in HHI.

Instead of replacing the cabinets (which where in good condition) we had them re-painted and replaced the hardware. We replaced the sink, stove/cooktop, exhaust fan, dishwasher, all the lighting and had quartz countertops and a subway tile backsplash installed. The hardwoods in the downstairs had two different woods off the kitchen and into the great room so we replaced the mismatch and had all the hardwoods resurfaced and blended. It was a good decision, thanks to Mr. Silver.

My colors are very monochromatic, however, I do like to mix different patterns. I call my style “curated casual” as I do like to collect eclectic pieces. I also repainted all of my mirrors from our mirror wall in our previous home, different shades of white so that they would blend in rather than stand out. And I’m happy I did, because many of them have been in our families for years.

I hope you enjoy a few before and afters and a few of my favorite nooks and hangouts. I plan to share more in the future.

I have linked many of the items we used, including my new favorite clean burning candles on Etsy that smell so very good. (She happens to be a neighbor.) And as always, I like to divulge that if you purchase from a link, I will earn a small commission.

Would love to hear your feedback and am open to drapery advice as I am leaning toward cream, linen pinch pleats.
