The Classic Fisherman Sweater
Hope everyone had a happy week. It’s been busy and although I’m ready for spring the weather is not cooperating cause it’s chilly. Sure hope my Northern friends don’t get that winter storm. February is going out with a punch.
I don’t wear a lot of wool anymore due to the temperature fluctuations in the south but since I am usually cold, I love a great cotton/knit sweater. And the “fisherman sweater” also known as an Aran, is one of my favorites. It is a true classic and will always be in style. Wear it with a turtleneck, or a shirt underneath you can dress it up or down with boots and jeans as shown or pearl and pumps. Today they come in so many colors and styles but the original was off white, which I’m styling today. The sweaters take their name from the Aran Islands off the Irish coast. These islands were home to both farmers and fishermen where these sweaters became a staple. Typically knitted from cream-colored yarn the Celtic women used knot-like stitching. The women who created these were extremely skilled because each sweater could take up to two months to complete and possibly have 100,000 stitches. And it is said that these women would use this as an activity in the evenings to commune and work together. As intricate as they were, I am sure they were not doing much drinking. Just my two cents.
Both sweaters I’m wearing are by J. Crew and pretty simple. I paired the cream with jeans and my cream UGG boots found at a favorite consignment store in Charlotte called Sweet Repeats Consignment Boutique. These beautiful boots had never been worn. I love these boots as the foot has the soft UGG lining. The other sweater is an Avocado green and I love the beautiful color. Both were styled casual and with jeans.
Do you have a favorite Fisherman sweater? I envy anyone that has an original Aran knitted in Ireland but know I could take the wool here in the South. (I have linked LiketoKnow.it links for shopping, if interested.)
Thanks for reading and until next time.
